![]() ![]() Spin-off about those scientists looking for aliens? Bring it in! A book describing a dying universe and humanity trying to survive? Make it two please! And of course, looking forward to seeing the next video.I don't really know if it's fair to write a critical review just because I expected something completely different. That killed it for me.Īll in all I feel very sad leaving the book a negative review, and I do really hope that John writes another book, where he would use his talent and knowledge to write about cosmos, universe, extraterrestrial life, and focus less on love, religion and human feelings that is a cliche in a power of 10. Let that sink in: the simulated computer inside is *FASTER* than the one running the simulation. To put it shortly: there's a computer in the book, that can simulate identical computer inside itself, only many many order of magnitudes *FASTER* that the original computer. Well, for one, if such a universe exists, and is 100% accurate, it means the computer inside it should exist as well, as much as all events that lead to its creation, making it an infinite loop, with the fast-forward feature pretty much meaning that every loop will be faster and faster, until the speed of simulation becomes infinite. So much coming out of this fact that I couldn't stop thinking about it throughout the book, and this idea never lives up to its full potential, never going deeper than considering witnessing Jesus crucifixion or visiting one or two planets, and something else eye-rolling, that is a spoiler. It just violates the very basic laws of logic. It's such a massive plot hole that it's impossible to keep the suspension of disbelief. Having quite a few plot holes, the biggest one undoubtedly is a computer of a size of no more than a building, that could simulate the entire universe 100% identical to the external one, starting from the Big Bang, and do so with incredible speed, fast-forwarding 14 billions years of creation in a matter of weeks. I mean, a good story shouldn't tell the reader how to feel and what to ask, it should *make* them feel it and ask it themselves via the means of narration.īut the biggest disappointment for me personally was the lack of hard science, and solid logic behind the story. ![]() These 'deep' dilemmas are spoon-fed to the reader. ![]() "Love is the ultimate manifestation of the Universe" - a human would answer. "Would you kill in the name of Love?" the incredibly powerful AI asks a human at some point, as if with it's power it couldn't analyze the entirety of the human history and make a perfect model of human behavior and accurately predict what exactly people can do in the name of love, as well as other feelings such as greed, envy, lust, hunger for power etc. The rest fall so much short of what I expected! The book takes itself very seriously, and has this vibe of sad melancholy raising very 'deep' questions on pretty much every page, revolving around religion, technology augmentation, in a clichéd dystopian society that, as genre demands, depicted in a way that you don't really want to live in, and (oh my goodness please NOOO) human feelings and love, that the AI tries to understand in a series of cheesy dialog. Too bad it all takes around 5% of the book. Accurate scientific descriptions of dying stars and the universe evolution are beautiful and captivating, and the brief stories about scientists in pursuit of extraterrestrial life are also very unusual and exactly what I was looking for. And to some extent you can feel it in his book. Being a John's subscriber on YouTube I decided to give it a go because unlike most sci-fi writers he seems to be really into hard science and cosmology. ![]() I don't really know if it's fair to write a critical review just because I expected something completely different. ![]()

![]() ![]() In an example that ended up defining him instead of making him an annoyance, Kabal was the fastest character in the game. Both Rain and Noob Saibot have unlimited combos in Trilogy, the former using his screen-wrapping roundhouse over and over, and latter using his Teleport Slam.Thankfully, later revisions slowed down Nightwolf's running speed and kept him from Stryker's fate. This let him pull off combos which were both impossible to avoid and not actually supposed to be possible in the first place. In early arcade versions, he could run faster than he could throw. Nightwolf had this early on in the original MK3's life cycle. This blew him to full-on Creator's Pet-dom and cemented his being Put on a Bus until they brought back absolutely everyone for Armageddon. Kurtis Stryker went from out of place in MK3 to out of place and freaking annoying to fight in UMK3 when Midway gave him a gun for one of his special moves. The shattering of that theme also played in with the above, since with no overarching theme to the locations, it resulted in players realizing how ridiculous the characters looked - it's a little hard to take things seriously when you've got a cyborg ninja and a muscular woman with four arms beating each other up in a bog-standard subway station. Since the game takes place on Earthrealm, about half of the stages lack the interesting Asian-influenced mythological feel of the first two games and are rather mundane, such as "The Bridge", "The Waterfront" and the ever-exciting " Bank".Now you had the magical Indian, the Super Cop, the deformed guy with a respirator helmet, and a whole mess of cyborgs. Until then even the American characters were still supernatural martial artists in exercise clothes. It was the moment when the cast gained familiar, western tropes.Meanwhile, Sub-Zero's iconic "spine rip" fatality is reduced to a simple cut to black and some sound effects, because they never bothered to do any sprite work for a convincing decapitation. Amusingly, one of Rain's Fatalities in Trilogy combines both: he uppercuts his opponent with such force that his head, torso, upper legs and lower legs separate on the way up and reassemble upside-down, with the end result looking like just the aforementioned still frame flipped 180 degrees. ![]() Compare the decapitations in MK3/ UMK3 (where the head simply falls off the body straight to the ground, the body - a still frame from the "dizzy" animation, by the way - standing completely upright) to the ones in MK2 (the head tumbles in the air as it's lopped off and rolls a couple of times on the ground while the body drops to its knees and then flops onto the floor).
![]() ![]() By that I mean that the seats in the corners do not face the rink directly, so avoid sections 4, 10, 16, and 22. Inside, the seating bowl is small and intimate, but it does not fully encircle the rink. The administrative offices are also here. Upstairs you will find a trophy case with a number of awards for the team. There are other points of interest here, including a memorabilia room, which deserves a visit, as it contains exhibits on hockey history throughout P.E.I. As you enter through the doors, you will find yourself in the atrium, where the box office, team store, and main concessions are. The main entrance is behind a large, red latticed canopy that adds some color to the front of the facility. Large logos of the two tenants are found on either side of the arena’s name. Because of this, the arena does not look like an arena, rather it is a long, flat building with red and sand-colored bricks on the bottom and a plain blue corrugated metal skin on the top. In addition to the racetrack, the complex includes a casino and a convention center. Note that the odd prices are because the tax will be added so the final total will be 15% higher. As well, you can visit the Moose Light Lounge above section 5 for a draft beer and a table to relax at. Beer is sold in cans and on tap at various points around the arena, with Moosehead and Alpine being the most common varieties. Pepsi products are available with a regular soda going for $2.60 and a large for $3.05, while Gatorade is $2.80 and a bottle of water is $2.20. There is also a Tim Hortons in the lobby that serves coffee, muffins, and donuts at the same prices you would see outside the arena. Other items include Mozza sticks (5 for $5.86), popcorn chicken (also $5.86) and onion rings ($3.75). Poutine is, of course, the recommended option with a small going for $4.99 and a large for $6.50. The Eastlink Centre has a large lobby with a canteen that serves typical arena fare such as hot dogs ($3.49), hamburgers ($4.95, add 30 cents for cheese), nachos ($5.65) and pizza ($3.47 for a slice). Note that all prices are in Canadian dollars and at the time of writing C$1 is worth 75 cents US. Now known as Eastlink Centre after a telecoms firm bought the naming rights, the venue is also home to the Island Storm of the National Basketball League of Canada and sits right next to the Charlottetown Driving Park, a harness racing track. In the end, fans voted for the “Islanders” as their team name by a large margin and the new brand has turned the tide of the junior hockey club as attendance figures are rising again. The new ownership group sought a new team name that best represented the area and people of their city. With financial difficulties hampering the franchise, it looked like Charlottetown would again lose a hockey team until a local ownership group bought them in 2013. However, attendance steadily decreased after that and the team managed only one playoff series win through the 2013 season. Rocket (named for Maurice “Rocket” Richard), the team took up residence in the renovated Charlottetown Civic Centre, which had hosted the AHL Senators some years before.Įxcitement for the new team was evident the first two seasons saw an average attendance of well above 3,000 per game. ![]() Origin is closing its doors soon, so you're in the right spot to find and buy EA games. The Expos were not the first team to leave Montreal for a capital city elsewhere, as the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Montreal Rocket moved to Charlottetown, capital of Prince Edward Island, in 2003. You could exclude areas if they were too far away, or too dangerous. You had a little tax collector dude (or dudes) that went around knocking on doors and collecting a % their on-hand assets (which you set). ![]() You funded (from treasury) upgrades to goods producers, but nobody got those upgrades until they went and purchased those things from their own money. You put up rewards for actions, but those were or were not acted on based on whatever your citizens were doing. Majesty had tax collectors, a market economy, and a hands-off governing policy: You funded creation of main buildings, but they were or were not occupied based on demand for those buildings. Armies actually need "training", "Morale" and all that stuff. You pretty much convert immigrants into Police (and then subsequently dying) at unrealistically high speeds. so no new Police would come out to defend.)Īlso, immigrants come extremely quickly in Pharaoh. (In contrast, if you actually had an approaching army, the Police would die, and then they'd destroy the Police Station. This works because Hippos only attack citizens, never buildings. Each time a Police dies, they hire a new citizen rather quickly, eventually your infinite stream of Policemen kill the Hippo. Police don't have morale-stat and will fight to the death (in contrast: your armies will break formation and retreat). The other plan is to set up a lot of Police Stations. ![]() (I've literally built the Pyramids before the Hippos died. If you see 2 or 3 Hippos in a singular area, you'll need a substantial Army to clear them out.ĮDIT: If you're lucky and can push the Hippos out to the river somehow, your Navy can bombard the Hippos with impunity, but it takes a long time for those ships to kill a Hippo. I do believe you require approximately two fully-equipped and high-morale legions to kill a singular Hippo in that game, no joke. ![]() īut really, they were mostly just killed by Hippos. You could make an entire game about just that subject.ĮDIT: As a follow-up, I found this history of land & tax policy in Denmark going back to the middle ages to be quite fascinating and might be a useful point of contact for this sort of thing. There's also very rarely any distinction between government spending and private spending, and how government spending on public goods influences the asset values of private interests. I always feel tax policy & land use is very rarely explored in games in most of these games if you can set tax rates at all it always seems to be a straight tax on productivity so you just have to pick the amount of deadweight loss you're willing to accept to generate the revenue you need to run your government. This is the part that's most interesting to me. This way, the experiences of our medieval forebears are visualized and may help to educate the public about medieval village life. Tithes, taxes and rents! Instead of merely abstracting the taxes into an income modifier or letting the player be the extractor himself, we could be shown the tax collector visiting the village, counting the sheaves by the side of the road, selecting the calves and chickens. And finally, something that would, in my opinion, really add to the realism and historical flavor of a medieval-themed city builder would be the introduction of mechanisms in which agricultural surpluses are skimmed by the church and the feudal lord. ![]() ![]() ![]() Instruments and patches which show the download icon require an additional download, which you can launch via the Add-on manager. n-Track instruments: In this section, you’ll find a list of n-Track’s built-in instruments.External instruments: Here you’ll find all supported third-party virtual instrument plugins available on your system. The browser is organized in three sections: It will popup when creating instrument tracks, or when you tap on a MIDI track’s output slot, so you can easily choose a new instrument or switch the sound on an already created instrument track. The instrument browser lets you choose the instrument you want to play via MIDI. If you uncheck this box, but leave the grid on, then you’ll be free to move regions in any point of the timeline, and still use the grid as a useful tempo reference. This can be useful if we’re creating more electronic or loop based music. If this is enabled, when we move audio and MIDI regions their start position will be quantized to the closest grid value. You can set the grid time resolution by tapping the grid settings window (see the picture below).Īs you can see there’s also a "Enable snap to grid" checkbox. You can enable the grid by tapping on the “grid icon”. The grid function can be useful during editing, and in general when you need a reliable tempo reference while working on your song. To turn it off, just open the metronome and switch it back off. You’ll now hear the metronome both during playback and recording. To activate the metronome, switch it on with by tapping "enable". You can select the bpm of your song by tapping the Metronome icon and selecting the bpm you need. It’s a common use to record songs by following a click track or metronome, and then use the grid to align our recordings to the song’s tempo. Input to output latency can be made very small when using compatible external USB audio devices. If you want to minimize the input to output latency, try our recommended configuration. The lower input to output latency you can set the less problems with recording latency you'll have. These new device drivers are more modern that OpenSLES (supported since the beginning of Android) and should allow for slightly better latency performance. On Android 8.1 or later you can select the AAudio audio device drivers for audio input and output. When the device supports "pro" or "semi-pro" latency performance you may check the Enable low-latency audio option that sets the device's preferred buffer size that triggers the device's lowest possible latency. n-Track will say wether the device is capable of low latency performance in the settings box. Not all Android devices and versions of Android allow for the same latency performance. You should try to use the minimum possible buffering that doesn't generate clicks. This happens when the buffers are so small that the device can't keep up and some short bursts of silence ( dropouts) interrupt the audio. If you decrease too much the size and/or number of buffers you may notice clicking sounds during playback or live monitoring. You can adjust the size and number of audio buffers in the Settings box. The smaller the audio buffers and the lower their number the smaller will the delay be. This is caused by the fact that audio moves between the app, the operating system and the hardware audio device in chunks of data called audio buffers. When you use instrument plugins (such as the sampled instrument sounds built into n-Track such as Piano, Drums etc.) or when you monitor with headphones the audio comining into the mic, you may hear a short delay between the time when you press a key on the on-screen keyboard or drum pad and when you hear the sound. The app will emit a short burst of sound while recording the mic input, and will then try to align the original with the recorded burst. When you perform the latency calibration make sure you are in a quiet room, you disconnect any headphones and external USB audio devices or adapters, and that you turn the volume of the device all the way up. You can always repeat the latency calibration by selecting the latency calibration button in the Settings box. The app will prompt you to calibrate the latency when you first try to record. To overcome this issue n-Track includes a latency calibration mechanism. the length of the blocks of audio data that are passed between the app and the hardware audio device) is not totally under the control of the app that is doing the recording, so the app doesn't know exactly how to align the recording relative to the existing tracks. This is needed because of the way the audio flows through the Android operating system. ![]() On Android when you overdub tracks n-Track needs to perform what is called latency compensation. ![]() ![]() It’s also made for group dates - the more, the merrier!
